Whilst waiting for the established fighting series to make its full on next-generation debut, Dark Resurrection Online is more than enough to keep fans going.
Aside from the original incarnation of Tekken 5 on the PS2, Dark Resurrection was only previously released outside of traditional arcades on the PSP. Here on the PS3, as you would expect from a High Definition capable device with lots more power under the hood, it arrives with massively improved visuals. The character models are huge, detailed and crisp, the backgrounds look great and the mechanics are as solid as ever. So much so that Dark Resurrection feels like it wouldn’t be out of place as a full commercial release and is the closest you’ll get to having the arcade machine in your home without actually buying the arcade cabinet.
With over thirty fighters to choose from including the latest characters Dragunov and Emily “Lili” Rochefort the player will certainly be able to find one that fits their playing style or have a massive task in trying to perfecting them all since there are literally hundreds of combo’s and moves. As usual the computer controlled opponents are also more than enough of a challenge for even veteran gamers.
There are also a number of play modes including Ghost Battles, Time Trial and Survival, but unlike other versions there is no Arcade mode. Originally the PS3 release did not feature online play and although the game has now been patched to include it, it is disappointing that this requires the player to pay more if they’ve already purchased the game. Really it should have been included from the start (which is where Resurrection Online comes in).
In any event, Tekken: Dark Resurrection Online is a great looking fighter with a proven, solid lineage that makes it a dream come true for fans of two on two brawlers.
