Character Select Network: Console Arcade’s Picks of October 2011

With November upon us, and the big day of fireworks and bonfires already behind us, it’s time once again for a look at what the other members of The Character Select Network have been up to.

This month we’re super-happy to welcome along the newest member of the Network, Cane & Rinse. So without further ado, here’s my pics of the best content produced by the other sites in the last thirty days or so…

Ready Up

The State of DLC

Kristen Kearney looks at what’s right and wrong with the current model for DLC – there’s even a pie chart and everything!

I’ve missed out on much of the excellent DLC for titles like Fallout 3 and New Vegas, Red Dead Redemption. Dragon Age 2 and L.A. Noire because it was released once I’d completed the main game. In fact little of it was released particularly long after I finished those games but long enough that I’d been distracted by some other shiny bauble. It looks as though I’m not alone.

Gamerdork

Thank You

With the passing of Apple’s head-evangelist last month, Gamerdork’s Moose (possibly not his real name) gives a short but very poignant take on why the people behind the tech are often as important as the things they create.

If there is one crime we, as consumers, are all guilty of, it is that we focus far too much what the product can do.  Whether it be an armchair, a video game, or a rocket ship, each of these inventions affects our lives in ways we can never truly appreciate.  Far too often, we forget the importance of the people behind the projects, and it is exceptionally rare that one of these people becomes a Steve Jobs.

Cane & Rinse

Resistance 3 Review

New kids on the block Cane & Rinse aren’t predominantly about reviews but that hasn’t stopped Sean O’Brien writing a nifty little summary of Insomniac’s latest release in the Resistance series.

Most end-of-the-world games at least try to make you believe there is still hope yet in these dire circumstances. It’s the idea that you, a lone survivor, have the ability to change everything, and save us all. Not Resistance 3. This is perhaps the bleakest post-apocalyptic game you’ll have played. I absolutely loved it. The game genuinely haunted me with the sights of a devastated America, which is something no other game has managed to succeed in.

Thumb Culture

Uncharted 3 Review

Meanwhile over at Thumb Culture, Paul Collett takes a look at Naughty Dog’s latest outing for everyone’s favourite Chaotic Neutral adventurer, Nathan Drake.

So, to answer to the question on most people’s lips is this better than the previous two games? The answer is yes. This is categorically the best game in the series. It is arguably the best third person adventure game you will find along with being one of the best looking games you will find today. It’s a genre defining game, Naughty Dog have taken the Action/Adventure bar, got a crane and lifted it to a height that every other games developer should reach.
