Square-Enix’s Final Fantasy has been released onto the Japanese PSN store, at a cost of ¥600. The first of the “Final” games in the never-ending series is as retro as RPGs get, but with this being the PSone release you’ll at least get a few CG movies for your money.
Square-Enix, previously so against putting their older games onto download services when they could remake them and sell them for full price seem to be lightening up, buoyed by the success of Final Fantasy VII, which sold over 100,000 in its first two weeks in North America alone. Of course, the release of games on PSN certainly doesn’t rule out future remakes anyway.
No word on a US/European release as yet, but with Final Fantasy not being released on its own on PSone outside Japan, there’s a chance we won’t see it. Cross your fingers for Final Fantasy Origins.
