New PS3 Firmware Breaking Consoles?

New update, new problems.

Reports coming in from the Internet that Sony’s new 2.40 Firmware for the PS3 is breaking consoles. There are lots of complaints on various gaming sites and forums (including Sony’s own) that after updating the system refuses to restart properly.

There are lots of rumours right now but people are suggesting that there’s something wrong with the download / install which misses out or corrupts a large chunk of data. As a precaution it seems that Sony have now pulled the update while they sort things out, so anyone who hasn’t downloaded it yet will have to stick with the previous version for the time being.

For those effected by the problem, the suggestion is that if you can take your PS3′s hard drive out and format it via connection with a PC, reinserting it will the allow the PS3 to boot. However you will loose all your profiles, game saves etc. But it’s suggested that it might be a bit better than the price that Sony will try and charge you for a repair.

No doubt as you read this, PSN bods are bevering away behind the scenes to try and sort this problem and we’ll update as soon as there’s news.
